Erachi Pola

Today's recipe is another Malabar delicacy 'Erachi Pola'.I prepared this during one of the Ramadan days but couldn't post it due to that months tight schedule. Our Iftar table is filled with dates, water, fresh fruits (salad or juice form) along with one type of snack. The snack part is specially for my little ones.MaShaAllah both of them love to fast without any fuss. They have taken 26, Alhamdulillah I feel really happy and blessed for that. Its not compulsory for their age but we can start preparing them for that without any forcing.Their first question when they enter kitchen is ,"What is for today's Iftar?"

I think apart from the traditional way there are many other ways too in which this is prepared, matching the same taste and with the same ingredients. This is a type of  savoury cake with layers of a meat filling in between. In our place it is prepared this way:
Ingredients
For the filling(I used Beef)
Beef/Chicken(boneless)        150-200 gms
(Cook the meat with a little salt, turmeric and chilly powder in a pressure cooker.Once it cools down shred them using the small jar of your Mixi.Keep this aside.)
Onion                       3 large (finely sliced)
Ginger crushed         1 tsp
Garlic crushed          1 tsp
Green chilly            4 nos.(finely chopped)
Turmeric powder                     1/4 tsp
Garam masala powder            3/4 tsp
Curry leaves                           2 sprigs
Salt                                    as needed
Oil                                     2 tbsp
For the Egg mixture
Eggs                 4
Milk                  1 cup
Pepper powder    3/4 -1 tsp
Turmeric powder    1/4 tsp
Salt                        as needed
-In a wide bowl beat the eggs along with the other ingredients and keep this aside.
Other Ingredients
Bread         7 to 8 pieces or more(remove the edges)
Ghee           2-3 tsp
Procedure
1st prepare the filling
-Heat a non stick pan,add oil and then add in the sliced onions.Saute adding salt.
-Add the crushed ginger garlic chillies and the chopped curry leaves.
-When the onion turns transparent add in the powders and saute well.
-Now add the shredded meat and mix well for 2 minutes.Switch off the flame.
Arranging or Layering
-Heat a non stick cake pan(medium size).Add ghee and spread it well on the sides and bottom of the pan. Then switch off the flame.
-Now dip each bread piece in the egg mixture and lay it inside the pan covering the bottom of the pan.You can fill the gaps with smaller pieces of bread dipped in the mixture.
-Now add a thin layer of the filling on top of the bread pieces.
-Again dip the bread pieces and layer on top of the filling.
-Then top it with the filling.
-Lastly again layer the dipped bread pieces, filling the gaps with smaller pieces of bread and pour the remaining egg mixture on the top and sides of the bread pieces.
-Keep the pan on the smaller burner of the gas stove with and cook for 20-25 minutes. If the top part is still uncooked you can flip the cake onto a prying pan smeared with a little ghee and cook for another 5 minutes.
