Thari Kachiyathu/Thari Kanji / Semolina Drink

A warm drink is always a must on our Iftar table.Last year I had posted a Nombu Kanji which is sometimes replaced with this Thari kachiyathu. This post was in my drafts from last year. But when Ramadan got over I delayed the post but now again we have reached the last days of this blessed month. With the tight schedule of Ramadan this year we had a maintenance work also going around in and outside my house. The computer connections were sometimes disconnected. Everything has somewhat got over now.All in all,Alhamdulillah I managed to complete one long pending guest post and did a new one too..phew!But somehow I wanted to put this post before Ramadan ended.
Thari kachiyathu (as said in our place) is something very easy to make with simple ingredients.I think there is only very slight differences in the making,in different regions. Some make it using fresh milk while some use coconut milk and a few use both. There is an addition of fried shallots along with nuts and raisins which brings out the immense taste of the drink. Here I have used coconut milk. Now on to the recipe
Ingredients
Semolina/Rava/Thari      1/4 cup
Thick Coconut Milk
(1st extract)                11/4 cup
Thin Coconut Milk
(2nd extract)               2 cups
Sugar                               3 tbsp
Salt                                 1/4 tsp
Ghee                              2 tsp
Shallots chopped           1 tbsp
Cashew nuts chopped    1 tsp
Raisins (optional)           1 tsp
Method
-Heat a saucepan and add 1 tsp of ghee. Now add Semolina and roast for a minute(be careful not to burn).
-When the semolina turns slightly hot add in the 2nd extract of coconut milk.Stir without any lumps.
-Add the sugar, salt and mix well.
-When this starts to boil add the 1st extract of the coconut milk and mix well.Switch off the flame when it starts boiling.
-Heat a small frying pan and add 1 tsp of ghee.Add the shallots and fry till light brown, add in the cashew nuts and raisins. When the raisins puff switch off the flame and pour this over the prepared drink.
-Serve warm :)

  1. Love that you make your thari in coconut milk... we usually make it in milk, but I had a taste of it your way from my cousin's house and really loved it... but I always feel lazy to make it! Hehe... since long we have stopped the shallots in the tempering, as none of us at home like it... beautiful pictures too dear...
